It is SO good – the perfect fresh, gut-friendly breakfast. I won’t lie – I’ve never been much of a smoothie girl. My version of “awesome smoothie” was the Mocha Madness from Tropical Smoothie. Does anyone still go there? I haven’t been in ages (once I found out how much sugar they added to those things…). Coffee & chocolate: my kind of smoothie.
BUT. I think I found a new place in my heart for smoothies. Because you can eat it from a bowl and not slurp it with a straw! It’s just that much better when you have to use utensils to eat breakfast. If you have to use utensils, it means your smoothie is THICK and CREAMY, just the way it should be.
It has to be scoop-able. Like as thick as a Wendy’s frosty. That’s what I’m talking about!
And that’s exactly what this Banana Blueberry Kefir Smoothie Bowl is. Thick, creamy, frozen, sweet, luxurious, and topped with ALL THE THINGS.
So obviously, this smoothie bowl base is kefir!!!
This is also one of the first times I’ve ever had kefir. Late to the party, as usual.
Kefir is a cultured, fermented yogurt-type drink. It contains billions of live active probiotic cultures in addition to yeast, making it a staple in gut health! It’s incredible for healing digestive issues like leaky gut syndrome and for fighting yeast infections (candida), especially in the gut. There are a ton of other health benefits, like boosting immune function and resetting the gut after taking antibiotics.

I’m particularly fond of Green Valley; their products are lactose-free and certified organic. Their whole milk kefir is seriously insane. It’s incredibly creamy and rich! If you’re particularly dairy-sensitive or vegan, try coconut kefir instead!
Creamy kefir is blended with a large frozen banana, a bunch of frozen blueberries, almond butter, seeds, and honey for a gorgeous and delicious smoothie bowl. It’s so easy to make, and the topping options are endless! Plus one serving contains 12 grams of fiber!
Favorites right now? Crushed pistachios, all the fruit, and chia seeds. And more almond butter. Butttttt you could also top it with:

Life lately: I asked to be weighed blindly while at the doctor’s office last week. It was something I had to really think about before making the appointment. With the words “eating disorder” in my past, I knew that stepping on a scale would be triggering for me. In the last 6 months, I’ve wrestled with my relationship with food and my body. Truly, we are never “healed”, but always in recovery (and I’m okay with that). I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in recent months – days where I feel terrible about my body shape and size, and other days where I feel confident AF.
Going back to old podcasts, what I’ve learned is that worrying/obsessing over my body and food intake is a total waste of energy. How many hours/days/weeks have I wasted worrying if my pants will fit or if my midsection might be a little rounder? How much precious time has been wasted thinking about what I’m going to eat next?
Rejecting the diet mentality is something I’m having to wake up and actively think about daily. Otherwise, things start to slide. I feel like I’m at the point where I’m just like, “Whatever” about it all. Just ready to use my head space for more important things, like learning, growing, and connecting with my intuition.
I’m really starting to see the truth behind the old quote, “Life is short. Eat the cake.”

A creamy, luxurious smoothie bowl to boost your gut health! Rich in probiotics and antioxidants, this breakfast bowl is also gluten free, Paleo, and can be made vegan!
- 1 large banana, peeled and frozen
- 2 c. frozen blueberries
- 1 c. whole milk kefir or coconut kefir
- 1/4 c. old fashioned oats (gluten free if needed)*
- 2 Tbsp natural almond or cashew butter
- 1 Tbsp honey (maple syrup if vegan; omit if Paleo)
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1 Tbsp flax seed
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Toppings: crushed nuts, granola, berries, sliced banana, chia seeds, almond or cashew butter, dark chocolate, toasted coconut
Place the frozen banana, blueberries, kefir, oats, almond butter, honey, chia seeds, flax seeds, and cinnamon into a high-powered blender. Blend on high 3-5 minutes, scraping down the sides if needed, until smooth and creamy. If needed, add a few ice cubes to keep it frozen.
Divide between two bowls and top with your choice of toppings!
*Note: if Paleo, omit the oats and add another frozen banana.
